CISSP vs CCSP: Which ISC2 Certification Should You Take?

CISSP vs CCSP compared — both ISC2. Focus, exam format, domains, experience, difficulty, and careers. A clear breakdown of generalist security versus cloud security.

CISSPISC2

Certified Information Systems Security Professional

The gold standard for security practitioners who design and manage programs.

Best for: Security engineers, architects, and managers who build and run security.

CCSPISC2

Certified Cloud Security Professional

The specialist credential for securing data and systems in the cloud.

Best for: Cloud security engineers and architects working across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS.

The short answer

Both come from ISC2, so the question is breadth versus depth. Choose CISSP if you want the widely recognized generalist credential that proves you understand security across eight domains, from cryptography to software development. Choose CCSP if your work centers on the cloud and you want to prove deep expertise in cloud architecture, data security, and cloud operations.

These are not rivals. CCSP is built to extend a strong security foundation into the cloud, which is why many people earn CISSP first for breadth and then add CCSP as they specialize. ISC2 even lets either certification satisfy part of the other's experience requirement.

How the exams differ in practice

CISSP is adaptive: the test adjusts to your ability and ends once your result is statistically certain, pulling from all eight domains. Its questions ask for the BEST answer among several reasonable options. CCSP is a fixed 150-question form across six cloud domains — cloud concepts and architecture, data security, platform and infrastructure security, application security, security operations, and legal/risk/compliance — and its scenarios assume real familiarity with how cloud platforms actually work.

CISSP tests how widely you can reason about security; CCSP tests how deeply you understand it in a cloud context. Scenario practice matters for both, but for CCSP that practice has to be genuinely cloud-flavored.

Frequently asked questions

Is CISSP harder than CCSP?+

They are hard in different ways. CISSP is broader — eight domains and an adaptive, best-answer format — so most people find the preparation more sprawling. CCSP is narrower but deeper on the cloud, so it is harder for anyone without solid hands-on cloud experience. If you live in the cloud, CCSP can feel more approachable than CISSP; if you do not, it will feel harder.

Should I get CISSP or CCSP first?+

For most people CISSP first makes sense, because it builds the broad security foundation that CCSP then extends into the cloud. But if your role is squarely cloud security and you already have that grounding, going straight to CCSP is perfectly reasonable. Lead with the one that matches your current work and career direction.

Can I hold both CISSP and CCSP?+

Yes, and the pairing is common and well supported. Both are ISC2 credentials, and holding one can count toward the experience requirement for the other. Together they show broad security knowledge plus deep cloud expertise, which is a strong profile as more organizations move to the cloud.
